FREMONT, Ohio (Friday, March 14, 2008) - A fire caused damage to the historic covered grandstands at Fremont Speedway Friday, March 14. However, Fremont Speedway Promoter Richard Farmer said the 57th season opener for "The Track That Action Built" will go on as planned on April 19.

According to Fremont Fire Chief Dan DeVanna, the fire broke out late Friday morning and was started by a golf cart parked under the covered grandstands. He added the smoke followed up the rafters causing minor damage, prompting firefighters to remove pieces of the grandstands.

"It damaged a good sized portion of the grandstands, mainly toward turn 1. They had to knock holes in a section of the concession area to make sure there was no fire inside," said Farmer. "It will take a lot of work, but we'll be alright...we'll be ready for opening night."

No injuries were reported.
