Brock Mayes gets redemption at Fremont; Clark takes 305 sprints; Hennig tames trucks

FREMONT, Ohio - Brock Mayes and his pit crew got a good night's sleep after
Saturday's racing at Fremont Speedway. They had stayed up all night on
Friday, building a new car after he destroyed his 410 sprint while leading
at Attica Raceway Park. It was worth it as Mayes won his 7th career feature
on McDonald's Night at "The Track That Action Built."

"My crew hasn't been to sleep yet since Friday morning at work. They stayed
up all night building a new car with stuff we had left over in the shop.
Kear's - Micki and Mark - met us there for the new car and I left there at
one...this feels awesome," said Mayes in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside
his J&F Construction, Mansfield Cement, Kinn Brothers Heating and Cooling
backed #11b.

"This was more of a wallet and a pride thing. I told Daniel (Smith, crew
chief) we aren't going two nights in a row starting on the pole and not win,
so I'll see ya later," added Mayes of his second win of the season a Fremont
on night #8 of the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title
Series.

Fremont's Bobby Clark won his 22nd career feature by taking the Fremont
Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature. The win moves him into a tie for
18th on the track's all-time win list. It was a very special night for
Clark, who also piloted the Hammer Racing #81 in the Fort Ball Pizza Palace
410 Sprints. The car was decked out in a paint job similar to that raced by
his idol, the late Harold McGilton. McGilton who was part of the first
induction class into the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame during ceremonies
earlier in the evening.

"Sittin' there today (at the hall of fame ceremonies)...that's a real
important thing. And it's great that you guys got that thing started. A lot
of those people need that recognition and there's a lot more out there.
Maybe some day I'll make that list," said Clark in the Engine Pro Victory
Lane beside his Al Davis Carpeting, Fremont Fence, Jenny's Copper Penny, B&L
Plumbing, Erlin Trader backed #40.

"I appreciate the Hammers for letting me drive that car...that was a real
nice thing for me," continued Clark. "This one is for Harold tonight," added
Clark.

Castalia, Ohio's Dan Hennig had to hold off a late race charge by Jim
McGrath and Jimmie McGrath Jr. to record his second career Fremont victory
in the Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks.

"I hated them restarts...I wanted the whole thing to go green. I felt like I
had a good enough lead on everyone. I didn't want anyone bunching up on me.
This pays after Attica last night. I started on the outside of the front row
and I finished 10th because I spun out on my own," said Hennig in the Engine
Pro Victory Lane beside his Reidy's Auto World, Level Performance, APD
Carburetors, York Fabrication backed truck.

"I have to thank my whole family. They help me with this. They take time out
to be here... I love all you guys," Hennig added.

At the drop of the green in the 410 sprint feature, Mayes jumped into a
commanding lead while Kevin Lee, Jody Keegan, Byron Reed and Clark trailed.
Keegan would move into second on lap three and Reed would gain the third
spot on lap four. Mayes was setting a blistering pace, encountering lapped
traffic by the 10th circuit while Jody Keegan, Reed and Kenny Jacobs waged a
torrid battle for second.

As Mayes picked his way through traffic - which has cost him two wins in
2009 - Reed would gain the second spot on lap 16 while Keegan and Jacobs
battled for third. Mayes would get a clean track when the yellow flew on lap
22, and he had four lapped machines between himself and Reed. On the
restart, Reed quickly disposed of the lapped cars as did Jacobs, but the
action would grind to a half for Clark who tangled with Phil Gressman and
ended up on his side in turn two.

On the restart, Reed dove under Mayes, but a Duane Zablocki spin would again
slow the action. With five laps remaining, Mayes put his wing back and set
sail, as Reed tried to stay close and hold off Jacobs. At the checkered, it
was Mayes, Reed, Jacobs, Craig Mintz and Keegan rounding out the top five.

"I've raced with Byron a lot and he's pulled me aside and taught me a lot
over the years...he's my favorite driver. The track was fast from top to
bottom and I wasn't sure where I was better. The lapped cars were keeping up
good..it was a challenge there. I rolled the wing back and said let'r eat
and figured I'm going to win it," added Mayes.

After an ill-fated attempt to start the 305 sprint feature which cost pole
sitter Jake Trevino as he got on his side, while third place starter Todd
Heuerman also was collected. The new line-up put Clark, who was originally
scheduled to start fourth, to the outside of the front row.

Clark would jump into the lead at the drop of the green as Jimmy Colvin,
John Ivy, Paul Weaver and Dustin Dinan battled behind for second. The race
would go the distance under green, and Clark had the field in
command...until he hit very heavy lapped traffic on lap 13. That allowed Ivy
and Weaver to close.

Clark would cut his way through the traffic as Ivy, Weaver and Kevin Lee
staged a wicked battle for second. At the finish it was Clark over Ivy, Lee,
Weaver, and Colvin.

"That double duty stuff is hard on someone like me whose work-out routine
isn't the greatest. But the car was just great and I could drive it
anywhere," said Clark.

Hennig would grab the lead in the 20-lap Fremont Fence Dirt Truck main, with
Jimmy McGrath Jr., Jim McGrath, Cory Ward, Art Ball and Steve Endicott right
on his rear deck lid. The first yellow would fly on lap five with Hennig
leading over McGrath Sr., Ward, Ball and McGrath Jr. Three laps and another
yellow, which would take Hennig out of any rhythm. On the restarts he just
couldn't shake the McGraths, Ward or Ball.

The final caution would fly on lap 13 for Word who spun while battling for
second. On the restart McGrath Sr. would drive to the outside of Hennig who
kept his cool and stayed in his bottom groove. McGrath Sr. would lose the
handle on his truck, falling back, as McGrath Jr., Ball and a closing Bob
Dible closed in.

Hennig would streak under the checkered while McGrath Jr. took second, Ball,
Dible and Kent Brewer rounding out the top five.

Earlier in the afternoon, a large crowd turned out for the inaugural Fremont
Speedway Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Being enshrined in the hall were
Johnny Auxter, Art Ball, Rollie Beale, the late Harold Billow, George Fosco,
the late Alvin Franks, the late Jimmie Ford, Darl Harrison, Gug Keegan, Jim
Linder, "Irish" Jim McCune, the late Harold "Mac" McGilton, the late Gene
Notestine, the late Herbie Robinson, the late Dorothy Shilling, the late
Wendell Smith and Paul Strasser.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 13 for Crown Battery
Night with the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints, Fremont Federal Credit
Union 305 Sprints and the Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks in action.
