| April is thought to have acquired its name from the Latin word Aperire, which means "to open". It is refreshing to open your windows and let crisp spring air flow through your home, buds will open and bloom to create wonderful spring colors and smells, and our much awaited racing season is scheduled to open revealing the latest cars, new colors, and a fresh attitude. Unfortunately all too often during the month of April the skies will also open to produce the frequent rain showers that wreak havoc on our opening day.
Hilltop Speedway in Millersburg Ohio was all set to open with Super Late Models, Modifieds, and Pure Stocks on Friday April 11 followed by the Saturday night premier of Limited Late Models, Mini Stocks, and Mini Truck racing but the threat of thunderstorms and soft track conditions forced cancellation. Track owner Jeff Norris expressed his disappointment but called the races off early to avoid unnecessary travel for race teams and fans. "As much as I wanted to get the show going it's pretty certain the weather isn't going to cooperate and with gas prices the way they are I don't want to chance it. It's still early and this gives me more time to get the track right for the IRS Late Models next week." Jeff and his team have been busy with preparations and resurfacing the track readying for a very exciting and action filled new season.
Next week will now be a double opener as Hilltop Speedway and the Independent Racing Series will both kick off their seasons with the "Deadline 50" for Super Late Models taking top billing along with Modifieds and Pure Stocks. The gates will open for this spectacular on April 18 at 5:00 and hot laps will begin at 6:30 followed by time trials. Green flag racing will start with Late Model heats at exactly 8:00 on the high banked and full of grip 1/3 mile bullring. Up for grabs is a record high, for both the series and the track, SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS offered the Super Late Model feature winner. However, this record is expected to be short lived as more high paying events will soon follow as the IRS and Hilltop Speedway continue to grow.
Drivers attempting to claim the cash and "beat the taxman" include last years "Deadline 50" winner Dave Hess Jr., series champion Rick Aukland, and Rookie of the Year titleist Wayne Chinn are expected to compete. Plus any one of a dozen Hilltop regulars are sure contenders for the win including track champion George Lee, Ryan Markham, Dave Hornikel, Jeff Esbenshade, and Eric Myers to name just a few. Last years race was one of the most exciting and talked about events of the season and we intend to do this one right as well. We look forward to seeing you on the Hilltop.

| The weather during mid-week had me figuring the weekend would be a total letdown, so I'm not too surprised. April, I swear.
I'm willing to do without May flowers, in lieu of NO April showers.
Is a shame too, because I stopped by the track at lunchtime Thursday, and it looked superb, especially when you take into account the abyssmal late winter / early spring weather we've had.
Dang, rats and even fooey.
See you next week.
Later, Sigler |
