Corey Gordon Takes 6th Annual UBB 29 Miners Memorial Away from Ricky Williams with
Turn 3 ‘slide job’ on Final Lap

CARNESVILLE, Georgia (8/13/2016) – Rescheduled from July 29, it looked as though the 6th Annual UBB 29 Miners Memorial would be rescheduled and Mother Nature would claim her fourth FASTRAK win in a span of just two weeks.

Remarkably, once the rain passed through the area, Princeton Speedway officials and staff and every race team on the property went to work in unison in an effort to get the racing surface in race ready shape in near record time. An indictor as to the level of cooperation; race teams didn’t have to be asked twice to aid in getting the track rolled in.

One racing action was underway, Beckley, WV driver Ricky Williams was P1 in virtually everything leading up to the 6th Annual UBB 29 Miners Memorial Feature event. Williams was quickest in his group in hot laps, quickest overall in hot laps. Williams when go on to be fastest in his group in FASTRAK Qualifying. After all 25 cars had qualified, Williams was atop the scoring pylon and collected $229.00 as fastest overall qualifier having circled the Princeton speedway in 17.422 secs.
Williams domination didn’t end in FASTRAK Qualifying. He would go on to collect another $290.00 in the Fast 6 Dash for Cash.

When the green flag flew marking the start of the 6th Annual UBB 29 Miners Memorial, Henry Hornsby of Beckley, WV jumped out to an early lead which he held until the caution waved on Lap 7. Williams would overtake Hornsby lll on the restart as the pair entered turn one. Hornsby lll pushed up the racetrack and Williams took command of the event.

While Williams set sail, Hornsby lll, Corey Gordon of Charlotte, NC, Benji Hicks of Mt Airy, NC and Glen Daniel, WV’s T.J Salango were waging a war of their own. Lap after lap, some combination of the quartet was 3-wide on the exit of turn two. As this continued to go on, uncontested, Williams had built a commanding lead.

By the mid-way point of the affair, Hornsby lll would fall to mechanical woes and the top-5 were; Williams, Hicks, Gordon, Salango and Matthew Nance of Ronda, NC

Over the course of the next twelve laps, Gordon took possession of the runner-up spot and held on to it longer than anyone else had up and to that point in the event. It wasn’t clear if Gordon had anything for Williams or not in the closing laps as he had to give thought to how to go after Williams without giving up P2 on the scoreboard.

The caution waved on the 37th of 40 circuits. On the restart, Williams and Gordon dove into turn one side by side. They would stay that way as the duo took the white flag. On the final lap, Williams was down low and Gordon was on the high side entering turn one, advantage, Williams. On the exit of turn two, Williams and Gordon were in a dead heat down the back straight-a-way. On the entry of turn three, Williams was ahead of Gordon but by virtue of being the car on the outside entering the corner, Gordon perfectly executed a “slide job” maneuver that left everyone in attendance scratching their heads as if to ask “did that just really happen?”

While Gordon is credited with having led lap 40 with the win, the actual distance traveled he was out front? The final 200 feet.

Chris Steele of York, SC was perhaps the fastest car on the speedway when the checkers fell. Having started in the 15th position on the starting grid, Steele was charging at the end finishing fourth in the final rundown.
